Hillsboro Water Department Rate Increase

BanksCuesta translated documents related to the water rate increase and provided virtual facilitation of the Spanish presentation of the water rate discussion with the community.  We collaborated with project lead Barney & Worth and the Hillsboro Water Department to prepare and fine tune details prior to our virtual community event. We presented details on current projects, future projects, and current water rate information in Spanish. This successful event provided timely information to the Spanish-speaking community of Hillsboro.

DEQ Recycling Steering Committee

As a subconsultant to Barney & Worth, BanksCuesta supported engagement with underrepresented communities as part of the Recycling Steering Committee’s efforts to modernize the state’s recycling system. Oregon is evaluating how the system is managed, who pays for it, which items can be recycled, and more. In the first phase of the project, BanksCuesta supported efforts to engage underrepresented stakeholders in a series of sessions conducted around the state, engaging rural populations, the houseless, and communities of color. BanksCuesta’s role included collaborating on development of interactive sessions, translation of final meeting materials into Spanish, and co-facilitated dual-language sessions. The resulting feedback informed the evaluation of a variety of frameworks being considered for the state’s recycling system.

The focus of the second phase of the project was understanding the work experience and priorities of the staff working in materials sorting facilities. During that phase, BanksCuesta conducted confidential stakeholder interviews in both English and Spanish and worked with Barney & Worth to develop the summary memorandum. At the end of the project, BanksCuesta provided a culturally relevant Spanish-language translation of a presentation summarizing draft legislation to improve Oregon’s recycling system.
